It’s not that Western Digital really needed one (they currently use wdc.com), but still WD.com can still be considered as an upgrade.
WD.com was registered back in 1994 by Western Design and stayed in their possesion till 2010 or so. Yesterday the domain name changed to Western Digital.
How Western Digital acquired the domain name is unknown. I couldn’t find any UDRP info about it so i guess it happend the old fashioned way. You know.. buyer pays seller money. Very old fashioned since it seems lately that every lowlife files an UDRP to obtain generic domain names cheap. If you want to read more about lowlifes who try to cheat the system by filing UDRP’s you might want to read this story that is still in progress here.
